School-Age ABA Program
The School-Age ABA Program offers up to three years of intensive behavioural intervention (IBI) for children diagnosed with Autism or ASD who have participated in the Preschool ABA Program or documented EIBI or ABA outside Manitoba.
Funding for participation in the School-Age ABA Program is available contingent upon agreement to facilitating ABA programs to occur in both school and home environments. St.Amant ABA consultants are invited to participate in school teams once schools and families have agreed that ABA is a beneficial component for a child.
Funding is also attached to the ability of St.Amant to work collaboratively with school teams in identifying areas in which ABA principles can be applied to existing educational programming in the school setting, based on provincial curriculum and with parents at their home.
The ABA Program expects to support the intensive, planned and consistent application of learning principles focused on improving skills relevant to the children’s academic and home lives. These skills and program involvement are specified through individual education plans at school and clinic meetings at home.
It is expected that ABA is occurring throughout a significant portion of the child’s day at school (approximately 20 hours per week). Support is also provided at home (5 hours of parent-led interventions and 10 hours of home tutor ABA sessions are expected to supplement school programming.
In order for program staff and school staff to work effectively towards the common goal of progress for individual children with autism, we rely on the child’s individual education plan process to serve as the focal point of the child’s educational planning. The Individualized Education Plan (IEP) is most crucial in that it establishes goals that are meaningful for the child and that are agreed upon by the school staff members, parents and ABA Consultant.
Once the IEP is established, the ABA Consultant offers support by:
- Designing programming around the goals he or she was designated as responsible for in the IEP.
- Providing formats for the collection and analysis of data.
- Providing regular training and feedback for team members who are facilitating teaching for the child.
- Participating in additional team meetings and updates on goals.
We also provide the additional support of an ABA Senior Tutor who provides assistance to the ABA consultant. The activities of the Senior Tutor will vary depending on the child, the family and the home environment.
